“Of Dance and Struggle”, composed by Karen Walwyn

MandelaMs. Walwyn was awarded the Mellon Faculty Award offered by the Franklin Institute at Duke University, 2011-2012 where she had the opportunity to travel to South Africa to conduct research for her multi-movement work for choir, solo piano, African Drums, Orator, and Dance entitled Of Dance & Struggle: A Musical Tribute to the Life of Nelson Mandela.

The work was premiered by Elon University Chorale under the baton of Dr. Gerald Knight and with the assistance of Jason Aryeh, choreographer, Dr. Willis Paterson, Orator, and Percussionists: Jim Roberts, Bradley Simmons and Robert Johnson on November 15, 2012 at the McCrary Theatre, Elon University, Elon, North Carolina.
